Late Blight

From Ellen E

Late blight was confirmed in Cheshire, CT last week when we had the cool wet weather. And a report came out today that it has been confirmed on long Island. The link below offers information on the organic management of late blight.

Just After Memorial Day

I've read a great book that is influencing what and where I plant. The book is Carrots Love Tomatoes by Louise Riotte and is a fountain of information about companion gardening, which plants like and dislike each other and how some plants can make others stronger and repel insects. Beware, she wrote another book called Roses Love Garlic!

Beautiful already!

A Note from Ellen - GARDEN #4

I was among the few who were working their plots on April 10. Of course, I was one of the lucky ones who'd had my plot rototilled then! Whenever I am there I like to walk around and check out what's happening in all of the plots, and while at first glance it may not look like much, if you look closely you will see a lot of things growing. Peas have sprouted for everyone who planted them that first week. Various plots also have lettuce, spinach, parsley, radishes, broccoli, pac choi, arugula, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, beets and kale. And I noticed yesterday that my carrots are just starting to sprout!

This is my first year in a community garden, and already I love it. Everyone was so friendly when we were working that first weekend, lending a hand if needed, sharing tips and tools, admiring each other's work. Susan Aziz brought her broadfork to turn her plot, and it was amazing how easy it made that task. We all wanted to try it, and before we knew it, one of Susan's beds was almost done. I so wish that I'd had my camera that day.

I hope to see everyone there soon. (EE)
